Matthew S. Smith on the future of freelancing
Prolific tech writer Matthew S. Smith shares insights on how we got here -- and what's ahead.
Hey again! For my second conversation, I spoke with Matthew S. Smith. He’s been in tech journalism for nearly two decades, including years spent as an editor for Digital Trends. But he’s been back to freelancing for years, and he’s never had a problem finding work.
Matthew and I go way, way back -- we were writing at the same website 15 years ago, and we both have experience going from managing a publication back to independent tech writing. We talk about everything from how we got here -- all the way back to Bright Hub, eHow, and the content farm days -- to the state of the industry now.
And yes, we talked about what’s happening with Digital Trends (and so many other publications.)
Like in my last chat, this is the kind of conversation you’d have with an industry contact off the record. Matthew shares tips for finding clients and charting a way forward. I hope you’ll find the conversation as interesting as I did.
